Definition: Boot Binder - The person who sews the upper leathers on.
Often given to women, children and old men. They sewed on the piece that had the eyelets for laces.
Definition: Boot Closer - Hand worker, or operator of a machine, that sewed together the upper parts of a boot.
The upper part of the shoe or boot consisted of anything above the sole. They stitched together the various components, added the linings, any decorative elements, lace holes, and laces.
Definition: Cobbler: Shoe mender.
A cobbler was trained to repair shoes. A son who was clumsier than most, and less creative was often given this position.
Definition: Cordwainer - A shoemaker who specializes in working with leather and who's craftsmanship is a step above a shoemaker.
Definition: Shoebinder - One who uses cement to bind pieces of leather together.
Responsible for assembling the upper part of a shoe or boot.
Definition: Shoemaker - Anyone who makes shoes.
Shoemakers were often involved in the creation of a pattern, cutting the leather, and adding the soles when the closure was finished.
